Reading the signals: what a coffee queue teaches about commercial leadership

I was waiting in a queue at a café recently, watching the barista manage multiple orders, with one customer in a rush and another clearly unhappy, and yet somehow every drink was made perfectly. It struck me that this was leadership in miniature, a small but powerful reminder of the challenges faced by commercial teams in pharma.
Spotting the shifts In pharma, priorities shift constantly, markets move, and competitor actions are rarely visible on dashboards. Teams often think they are following a clear plan only to discover that the landscape has changed. The leaders who succeed are those who can spot these subtle shifts and adjust quickly. As coaches and mentors, we work directly with senior leaders to help them read these signals, reflect on their decisions, and guide their teams with confidence and clarity.
“The leaders who succeed are those who help their teams see shifts early and adjust focus accordingly.”
Alignment over speed
A barista does not rush. They coordinate with the team to ensure everything flows smoothly, and in commercial operations, the same principle applies. Alignment across sales, medical, and marketing is critical. We coach senior leaders to build this alignment at the top, helping them clarify priorities, interpret signals consistently, and create a culture where the team moves together rather than chasing speed alone.
“Alignment matters more than speed; clarity and collaboration keep teams moving.”
The power of small adjustments Minor tweaks in workflow prevented chaos in the café, and similarly in pharma, subtle interventions - whether re-prioritising accounts, shifting resources, or adjusting team behaviours - can dramatically improve outcomes. Through mentoring, we help senior leaders recognise where small but critical adjustments are needed and develop the confidence to implement them effectively.
“Small adjustments often make the biggest difference.”
Leading beyond the plan
Leadership in pharma is not about having the perfect plan. It is about reading the signals, adapting, and guiding the team to do the same. The most effective leaders are those we coach to see beyond the obvious, respond to complexity, and maintain momentum across their teams.
“Leaders who are coached to read the signals multiply their impact.”
Every day offers lessons for those who look closely, and those who are guided to see them amplify their influence across the organisation.
